Third Thursday Organ Interlude February 16, 2017
The Third Thursday program for this month features Timothy Jones, a student of Dr. Jack Mitchener at Mercer University. For those who do not know Timothy, he is a first year organ student who also happens to be legally blind. If you would like to know a little more about Timothy and how he came to be here, go to the following link for a short video and a beautiful newspaper article about him.
Please come out to show your support for one of our organists of the future!

About the Series
Third Thursday Organ Interludes are midday concerts sponsored by St. Joseph Catholic Church and held monthly October-May except during March. The series was begun in the fall of 2004 as “Third Tuesday Organ Interludes” as a joint venture shared by Christ Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, Mulberry St. United Methodist Church, and St. Joseph Catholic Church. The intent was to showcase instruments in some of the historic downtown churches and to make the events convenient to workers in the downtown area during the middle of the day. The concerts would be free, but the decision was also made to accept donations which would be given to an outreach ministry designated each month by the host church. Each church was responsible for two programs per year on a regular rotation. This continued through the 2009-10 season, at which time two of the churches were unable to continue participating.
At that point, Fr. Allan McDonald, pastor of St. Joseph Church, gave his approval for the series to move on a permanent basis to St. Joseph, beginning in October 2010. The day was moved to Thursday because of calendar conflicts with other church events, and a generous donor volunteered to fund the series. In January of 2011 we were able to begin also offering the option of a soup/salad/sandwich lunch after each concert. We greatly appreciate the interest that has been shown in both the opportunities to hear a variety of delightful music and to make new friends at the luncheons afterward
*All concerts are approximately 30 minutes, begin at 12:00 noon, and are FREE. Lunches this year will be catered by local restaurants, and will be $10.00 per person. This month's lunch will be catered by Michael's on Mulberry.
About the Instrument
The current organ is a 53-rank Schlicker, installed in 1986, under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Fletcher Anderson, who was organist/choirmaster at that time. It replaced (and retained a small number of ranks from) the original 1903 Pilcher.

About the St. Cecilia Window
The watermark seen above and on programs is the St. Cecilia stained glass window, which can be found in the left transept of the church. St. Cecilia, the patron Saint of music and church musicians, was a lover of music. Martyred in Italy for her faith sometime between 176A.D. and 230 A.D., she is depicted in this window holding a small portatif organ and looking up to heaven. Her feast day, St. Cecilia Day, is celebrated on November 22nd.
